Alice in Wonderland ASCII Art

John Tenniel's wood-engraved Alice from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: Alice in her pinafore and striped stockings beside a small table, holding up the little bottle she has just found

The plate becomes 69 rows. Alice's head and long hair form a tall # and % cluster at the top center, the little table stands at the left as a dense column of * and #, and her pinafore spreads below in lighter - and = strokes. The bottle in her raised hand is too small to read at this width. Illustration: John Tenniel; ASCII conversion by this site.

Original source
Wikimedia Commons reproduction of a historical published illustration. Evidence link Evidence: Exact file record and SHA-1 checked October 27, 2026 UTC. Downloaded unchanged: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9e/De_Alice%27s_Abenteuer_im_Wunderland_Carroll_pic_04.jpg.
File creator
Illustration: John Tenniel (1820-1914), wood engraving drawn for Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Macmillan, 1865). Scanned, per the Commons record, from a PDF of the 1869 German translation Alice's Abenteuer im Wunderland (translated by Antonie Zimmermann), which reused Tenniel's illustrations. Subject: Alice with the bottle, from chapter 1, "Down the Rabbit-Hole". Evidence link Evidence: Illustrator, date and publication are taken from the exact Commons file record..
License or terms
Public-domain illustration and faithful two-dimensional reproduction. Evidence link Evidence: The illustration was first published in 1865 and printed in this 1869 edition; John Tenniel died in 1914, so it is out of copyright under any life-plus-70 or pre-1931 rule. The exact record is tagged PD-old-100, and the scan is a faithful two-dimensional reproduction. Alice, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat and the Hatter are characters from Lewis Carroll's 1865 novel; Carroll died in 1898 and the novel is public domain. These are Tenniel's original designs; no affiliation with or endorsement by Disney or any other later adaptation is implied. The exact file record lists no additional restrictions. Credits are retained voluntarily. Use as an educational conversion example implies no endorsement or affiliation; this does not clear later film, television or other adaptations of the same characters..
Preparation
The bundled file is the unchanged Commons original, including its paper tone and margins. Sharp applies orientation and sRGB/Lanczos3 sampling for thumbnails and the 100-column Standard preview. The ASCII is a lossy conversion by this site; no image regions are reconstructed. Evidence: scripts/build-example-previews.cjs; exact source and sampled-raster SHA-256 hashes in lib/generated/example-previews.json.

Owner review: PENDING. The exact-file illustration evidence is documented for owner review; it does not clear later adaptations, merchandise, or uses implying endorsement or affiliation.

README and chat presets use printable ASCII. Unicode blocks and edge lines need matching font support; emoji can occupy different widths on another device. PNG keeps this browser's rendering, not another app's emoji style.
