Stonehenge ASCII Art

A photochrom print of Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain from the 1890s: the standing stones and trilithons stand against a pale evening sky, with fallen stones and cart tracks in the grass in front

The white margin of the print becomes a blank frame, and the evening sky inside it is an even field of : marks fading to . near the horizon. The standing stones rise across the middle as clusters of #, * and %; the tallest trilithon with its lintel sits right of center, and the fallen stones make a low band of + and * at their feet. The grass of Salisbury Plain darkens toward the bottom into dense % and @. Photochrom print, 1890s, Library of Congress; ASCII conversion by this site.

Wikimedia Commons copy of a Library of Congress photochrom print of a landmark. Evidence link Evidence: Exact file record and SHA-1 checked October 28, 2026 UTC. Downloaded unchanged: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/ff/Stonehenge%2C_near_Salisbury%2C_England-LCCN2002708089.jpg.
File creator
Photochrom print, between about 1890 and 1900, listed in the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalogue as print 10069 and marked "10,069. P.Z. - Salisbury-Plain"; Photochrom Prints collection, Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division (ppmsc.08828, LCCN 2002708089). No individual photographer is named. Structure: Stonehenge, the prehistoric stone circle on Salisbury Plain, England. Evidence link Evidence: Photographer or publisher, date and Library of Congress identifier are taken from the exact Commons file record, separately from the structure shown..
License or terms
Public-domain photochrom print of a structure with no surviving copyright. Evidence link Evidence: The print was published by 1905, before 1931, so it is in the public domain in the United States; the exact record is tagged PD-1923, and as an anonymous work published in the 1890s its UK term has also expired. The monument was built in the Neolithic and Bronze Age, long before any copyright system existed. The exact file record lists no additional restrictions. Credits are retained voluntarily. Use as an educational conversion example implies no affiliation with or endorsement by the landmark's owner, operator, photographer or the Library of Congress; it makes no merchandise or trademark use of the landmark's name or image..
Preparation
The bundled file is the unchanged Commons original, including its existing framing and color. Sharp applies orientation and sRGB/Lanczos3 sampling for thumbnails and the 100-column Standard preview. The ASCII is a lossy conversion by this site; no image regions are reconstructed. Evidence: scripts/build-example-previews.cjs; exact source and sampled-raster SHA-256 hashes in lib/generated/example-previews.json.

Owner review: PENDING. The exact photograph and separate structure evidence are documented for owner review; this does not clear other photos, night illumination, merchandise or uses implying affiliation.

README and chat presets use printable ASCII. Unicode blocks and edge lines need matching font support; emoji can occupy different widths on another device. PNG keeps this browser's rendering, not another app's emoji style.

Sharing ASCII art in Telegram? Check monospace formatting and wrapping before sending. Ordinary chat formatting and Bot API HTML are different.

Edge detection

Edge Detection Only: 100 columns; rows = max(1, round(columns × source height / source width × 0.55)).

Edge Intensity: 1. Uses directional Unicode lines, not the selected character ramp.

Brightness 100%, contrast 100%, saturation 100%, hue 0, sepia 0%, inversion off. Dithering does not apply to this mode.

Character Optimization matches local glyph shapes in 4x8 cells at 8 px monospace. Compare texture with Standard; it is not a universal quality improvement, and your display font does not change the matching font.

Mosaic comparisons use 15 symbol columns, not the 100 columns of the character modes. The detailed recipe increases contrast to 150%; choose Coarse mosaic in the editor for the original five-column style.

Detailed emoji mosaic

Emoji Mosaic: sampling width 60, Emoji Size 4, squares set, transparent-cell symbol "⬜". Final columns = ceil(width / Emoji Size); rows depend on source aspect ratio.

Brightness 100%, contrast 150%, saturation 100%, hue 0, sepia 0%, inversion off. Dithering does not apply to this mode.
