Use the Online ASCII Converter: Input and Export
Choose an input method and save a usable result
Choose local-file or image-URL input, then save a small truck example as TXT or PNG. Understand browser permissions, offline limits and what is not saved.
Worked example: Truck for a terminal message
This guide uses the image-to-ASCII editor. The examples below are generated from the same source; this page is not a separate converter.
- Open the truck sample, or choose a local image in the editor. Local-file conversion does not need an image-host upload.
- For a remote image, use an image URL whose host permits browser access. Avoid private or signed URLs; the remote host still receives the request.
- In Options, select Standard ASCII Art and Output Width 40, then Generate ASCII Art. In Result, use Copy; if clipboard access is denied, select the result text or use Download TXT.
- Use PNG if the destination changes spacing. Download before closing the tab: editor drafts and outputs are not restored on reload.

The link selects the image only. Apply the listed mode and settings in the editor.
In Options, choose a mode and width, then select Generate ASCII Art. Open Advanced image settings for adjustments, character sets and mode-specific controls. In Result, use Copy, Download TXT or Download PNG. Generate again after changing settings to update the full result. ASCII Preview is reduced: up to 60 columns for character modes, or a fixed 32-pixel sampling width for Emoji Mosaic. Generate the full result to apply the selected Output Width or Sampling Width.
Browser setup and cached resources
- ✓No separate application installation is required. Open the image editor in your browser; site code and resources still need to download. Offline use requires completed cache setup and a previously visited editor.
- ✓Use an up-to-date browser with JavaScript and canvas enabled. Clipboard access, file saving and offline installation depend on browser permissions and support. Long text previews need Web Workers; image character matching uses a worker when Worker and OffscreenCanvas are available.
- ✓Safe updates: Download your work and close all app tabs to adopt a waiting update
- ✓Browser storage: The app caches site resources for offline use when browser storage is available
Privacy & Security
- 🔒Local files: The conversion code reads your selected file in the browser
- 🔒Website services: The site uses Google Analytics; third-party network ads are currently disabled. Read about data handling
- 🔒Remote images: Use a public HTTPS image URL whose host permits browser access; avoid private or signed links
- 🔒No Account Required: Use all features without registration or sign-up
🖼️ Image Conversion
- • Still JPG, PNG, single-frame GIF, WebP and uncompressed BMP input
- • Standard luminance mapping or Character Optimization glyph matching
- • Approximate tall-text-cell compensation; display fonts still affect proportions
- • Edge Detection line symbols or colored Emoji Mosaic output
- • Reduced preview; generate again to update the full result
⚙️ Advanced Controls
- • Customizable output width (20-200 columns in the editor)
- • Multiple character set options
- • Brightness, contrast, and saturation adjustment
- • Source filters change symbol selection, not plain-text color
- • Dithering in Standard and Character Optimization modes
📤 Export Options
- • One-click copy to clipboard
- • Download as text file (.txt)
- • Export as image (PNG) with custom fonts
- • Preserve spacing when pasting into a code block
- • One image at a time; save the result before selecting another
The Technology Behind It
Conversion runs in your browser. Remote image URLs still require a request to their source host; that host must allow browser access. A blocked request can often be avoided by selecting a local file you have permission to use.
Standard maps adjusted pixel luminance to symbols. Edge Detection finds outlines. See the algorithm explanation for mode differences, or the offline help for cached-tool limitations.
Browser requirements
| Problem | Next action |
|---|---|
| Blocked image URL | Select a local file you have permission to use, or a URL whose host permits browser access. Avoid private or signed URLs. |
| Rejected animation or format | Export one still frame to PNG, then load that file within the input limits. |
| Clipboard access denied | Select and copy the result manually, or use Download TXT. |
| Uncached offline resource | Reconnect to load the missing editor, font or image. Installation does not save drafts or make every resource available offline. |
See the upload and export tutorial for the full procedure, or offline help for cache limits.
Resource limits
- • Resize or crop a large input before loading it if the browser struggles
- • Input limits: Choose one image up to 10 MiB (10,485,760 bytes) and 24 million decoded pixels.
- • Output limits: 40,000 sampling cells and 1,000 sampling rows; reduce width or crop if rejected
- • Processing time: Depends on image dimensions, mode and device
- • Browser requirements: JavaScript and canvas are required; long text previews need Web Workers
Tips for Better Results
- • Check that the features you want remain visible in the source.
- • Compare contrast above and below 100%; higher contrast can flatten tonal detail.
- • Clear Subjects: Avoid cluttered backgrounds
- • Crop Important Areas: Focus on key elements
- • Try Different Settings: Experiment with character sets
Do I need to install anything to use the online ASCII converter?
No separate application installation is required. Open the image editor in your browser; site code and resources still need to download. Offline use requires completed cache setup and a previously visited editor.
Is the online ASCII converter free to use?
The converter is free to use without an account. Choose one image up to 10 MiB (10,485,760 bytes) and 24 million decoded pixels. Output and browser resource limits also apply.
Are my images safe when using the online converter?
Selected files are converted in your browser, not uploaded to an application conversion server. Image URLs still make requests to their source hosts. The site uses Google Analytics; third-party network ads are currently disabled. Browser-local conversion does not mean zero data collection. Read about data handling, browser storage and the vendor-free editors on the About page before using confidential content.
What devices and browsers support the online ASCII converter?
Use an up-to-date browser with JavaScript and canvas enabled. Clipboard access, file saving and offline installation depend on browser permissions and support. Long text previews need Web Workers; image character matching uses a worker when Worker and OffscreenCanvas are available.
