Tux ASCII Art: Linux Penguin

Copy a 40-column Tux penguin with attribution, download TXT or PNG, or edit the original source.

The compact penguin is 40 columns by 26 lines. A 100-column preview and the other conversion modes follow it.

Check the face and feet before sharing. Use a monospace destination; PNG preserves the layout when text would wrap. You do not need to install or run a downloaded shell script to use these exports.

Source identity: Tux is the Linux penguin mascot, created by Larry Ewing using The GIMP.

Both previews use the same original Tux source. The author permits modification with acknowledgement; the source record and compact exports retain credit. Check source, font and trademark rights before sharing.

Small Tux penguin

This 40-column version keeps Tux's eyes, belly and two feet. It converts Larry Ewing's original artwork, created with The GIMP, rather than copying an existing ASCII drawing.

Use a monospace block that preserves spaces and line breaks. This is multiline art, not an emoji. Copy, TXT and PNG include attribution after the art; those credit lines are wider than 40 columns. No terminal, chat or profile-field compatibility is implied.

40 columns, 26 rows

1065 characters, including spaces and line breaks.

Edit 40-column settings

Standard ASCII, neutral settings, no dithering. PNG uses black text on white at 12 px monospace. Browser regeneration may differ slightly. If you edit the source, add the attribution back before sharing; the image editor does not include it automatically.

Ewing's original permission statement allows use and modification with acknowledgement of the author and The GIMP if asked. We include that credit with the compact exports. This is not a Linux-project or author endorsement.

File creator
Larry Ewing, using The GIMP. Evidence link Evidence: The author's page identifies the images, author and drawing software. This is the original GIF, not a later vector tracing..
License or terms
The author permits use and modification with acknowledgement of Larry Ewing and The GIMP if asked. Credit is supplied here and in compact exports. Evidence link Evidence: The author states: "Permission to use and/or modify this image is granted provided you acknowledge me lewing@isc.tamu.edu and The GIMP if someone asks." This is the author's permission, not a Creative Commons or public-domain claim..
Preparation
Sharp converts the original single-frame GIF to PNG without resizing. The preview builder uses sRGB/Lanczos3 sampling and StandardMode; conversion composites transparency onto white. ASCII output is a lossy adaptation by this site. Evidence: scripts/build-example-previews.cjs; source/raster/output hashes in lib/generated/compact-tux.json and lib/generated/example-previews.json..

Owner review: PENDING. Exact original-file permission and attribution are documented for owner review. This record does not cover other Tux drawings or imply author or Linux-project endorsement.

Standard ASCII

Standard ASCII Art: 100 columns; rows = max(1, round(columns × source height / source width × 0.55)).

Character ramp: @%#*+=-:. (including a final space).

Brightness 100%, contrast 100%, saturation 100%, hue 0, sepia 0%, inversion off. Dithering: none.

Open this recipe in the editor to keep this source, mode and settings. Browser resampling and fonts can differ from the built preview. Copy/TXT retain text; PNG uses black text on white at 12 px monospace, at least 1.2 line spacing and 20 px padding, independent of screen theme.

README and chat presets use printable ASCII. Unicode blocks and edge lines need matching font support; emoji can occupy different widths on another device. PNG keeps this browser's rendering, not another app's emoji style.

Sharing ASCII art in Telegram? Check monospace formatting and wrapping before sending. Ordinary chat formatting and Bot API HTML are different.

Edge detection

Edge Detection Only: 100 columns; rows = max(1, round(columns × source height / source width × 0.55)).

Edge Intensity: 1. Uses directional Unicode lines, not the selected character ramp.

Brightness 100%, contrast 100%, saturation 100%, hue 0, sepia 0%, inversion off. Dithering does not apply to this mode.

Open this recipe in the editor to keep this source, mode and settings. Browser resampling and fonts can differ from the built preview. Copy/TXT retain text; PNG uses black text on white at 12 px monospace, at least 1.2 line spacing and 20 px padding, independent of screen theme.

Character Optimization matches local glyph shapes in 4x8 cells at 8 px monospace. Compare texture with Standard; it is not a universal quality improvement, and your display font does not change the matching font.
